We bet you’ve always been curious about all the different back massage techniques today, but we are also curious to know what’s your favorite type of back massage? We are going to be helping you make a choice about the best type of back massage for you and the specific pain that you may be currently experiencing. You do have to keep in mind that there are hundreds of different types of massage techniques, modalities, tools, and ways to receive a back massage. If we went into every single one of them we may have to actually write a book on the subject (which we just might…) as we progress.
To keep things simple for you as well as educational, we’ve decided to jump into the 4 most common types of back massage and explain the differences and why one may be more beneficial than the other for you and your unique needs. How’s that sound to you? Good? Ok, well, here we go into our amazing list of a few of the most common types of back massage techniques and why they may be favorable for you.
Swedish Back Massage
Swedish Back Massages may be one of the most common forms of massage given and received in the world today. This type of massage is generally the first type of massage anyone ever experiences when they visit a spa or massage therapy location for their first time. Swedish massage is a great way to help your muscles loosen up and begin to release toxins when you are looking for a calming and more relaxing type of back massage. This type of massage is designed to be very little pressure while meading the muscle tissue and pushing out toxins from muscles and into the bloodstream. This process allows your body to help you heal by getting rid of the toxic waste that tends to accumulate in our bodies over a course of time.
For people looking to alleviate pain and discomfort, this may not be the massage of choice. There is one particular ailment thought where receiving a Swedish Back Massage is truly beneficial and that is if you have Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes your body to always feel very tender and your muscles very sore even to the slightest touch. I’ve worked on clients with this condition and an interesting process occurs over a course of about 6 months and sometimes it takes as long as a year. The client begins their back massage with nothing more than a simple light touch softly helping them remove toxins from their muscles. Over time, they are able to increase the pressure because as the toxins are expelled from their bodies their bodies can receive deeper pressure due to feeling better.
If you fall into the category of just needing a nice soft and relaxing back massage, this may be exactly what you’ve been looking for. On the other hand, if you are someone who may be suffering from Fibromyalgia, this type of massage may be just what you’ve always needed to finally start feeling more comfort in your body.
Deep Tissue Back Massage
A deep tissue back massage is exactly as it sounds…deep tissue and it’s designed to help trip the muscles fibers and lengthen the muscle tissue. For people who have yet to ever experience a massage, this type of massage is generally not recommended as a first experience. The reason is because your body should be used to massage before you have it worked at such a deep level.
There tends to be a misconception of this type of massage because most folks tend to think it’s supposed to just be Swedish Massage with more pressure. The truth is that a Deep Tissue Massage is nothing of the sort. This massage is supposed to get deep into the muscles, you know, where the knots typically live and drive us all crazy. The technique used with this is pretty intrusive in the fact that it’s supposed to hurt a bit, a bit like being slowly pinched by a very strong person.
A great unknown benefit of a deep tissue massage is it’s ability to help break up scar tissue. Yes, that is very possible and something few people consider when they want to get a massage. The techniques utilized in a Deep Tissue Back Massage can be applied to very old scar tissue to help break down the scar and if given regularly can actually help nearly remove the scar tissue completely.
Chair Back Massage
Have you ever received a Chair Back Massage? If you have ever worked in an office, been to a sporting event, or even were just a tourist somewhere, chances are you’ve experienced or seen Chair Massages. This type of massage is one of my favorites because it’s quick, allows for the therapist to work on the targeted areas that have been driving me crazy such as back, shoulders, and neck area. This type of massage can be performed anywhere there are people as well because you can remain fully clothed during the entire massage.
A lot of people tend to like this type of massage because they can get a quick massage to target areas of concern and it’s wonderful for people who work at desk jobs and on computers all day. The Chairs for these types of massage are ergonomically designed to actually put your body in a relaxed muscular state to aid in massage. Another great benefit of the Chair when receiving your massage is that the therapist can work both Deep Tissue as well as Swedish Massage with some alternating techniques as well.
If you are someone of limited mobility and need a back massage performed, this type of back massage is our suggested choice as well. The reason is because you don’t want to have to try to climb onto a massage table for your back massage if you have very limited mobility as this may actually cause more pain and discomfort, which should never be the aim when seeking a back massage.
This isn’t the end of all our lists, but we truly hope this has been beneficial in helping you select the type of back massage that may be best for you.
